This is a rare "pancake" lens. These lenses were made for a half frame
SLR, the famous Olympus Pen F
series. The lenses are small and light, but do not cover full format.

Sample pictures: You may click
on the sample image (except closest focus) for full resolution. The
full resolution image opens in a new window, so you can keep it open
for comparison. Focus is on the
satellite
dish to the right of the big solar panel near the center of the photo.
ISO 160.
F 2.8.
F 8.
F 16.
Closest focus (F8) is less than 80cm from
outermost
edge of the lens. Focus on
the top of the camera.
I
have an Olympus Pen F close-up lens. Attached to this 38 mm lens, it
brings down the closest focus to only 20cm, focus on the base of the lens. The close-up attachment is visible on my Pen F accessory page
(link opens in a new window), about the middle of the page. This photo
is not cropped. As you can see, the pancake lens nearly covers full
format.
As
this lens does not cover full format (unless you want a Lomo style
vignetting), you have to set your camera to crop mode, but it vignettes
less than the other lenses of the series. Wide open
it is already very nice. It's a very small and very lightweight lens,
the 55mm in
crop mode brings it to a standard lens. An ideal lens for street
photography, hence its hefty price today. And it's an extremely
nice lens for the APS-C series cameras, like the A5000/6000.
